Signed and sealed: Govt signs 10 year contract with Russian company to install GPS trackers in automobiles as directed by president Museveni.

On 23rd July 2021 the Ugandan government signed a contract with Russian company, Joint Stock Global Security to install Global Positioning System (GPS) trackers in all public and private vehicles motorcycles and water vessels in the country.

The public on hearing this thought of thier privacy and most of the people dis not like it since the government will be able to track thier every move which they think infringes on privacy however during the signing of the contract, the Security minister Gen. Jim Muhwezi assured that all information collected will be used for strictly security purposes.

“The purpose of this Intelligent Transport Monitoring System ( ITMS ) is only one; it is security and I would like to assure everybody that this system is not going to interest itself in the private matters of all the motor vehicle users …” he assured.

The minister said that the system will easily identify automobiles that are involved in crime easily something that the CCTV cameras can not do. He also advised those who thing the move has infringed on thier rights to go to court as provided by the constitution.

Article 27 of the constitution states that no person shall be subjected to interference with the privacy of their home, correspondences, communication or other property.
