Golden eyes: ugandans Peruth Chemutai wins gold in Tokyo Women’s Olympic 3000m steeplechase

22 year old Chemutai peruth made Uganda proud by winning the 3000 meter steeplechase during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on August 4th 2021 in Tokyo-Japanm making her first Ugandan woman to win gold in Olympic sport

Peruth timed 9min 01.45sec at the Olympic Stadium, outsprinting American Courtney Frerichs with 250 metres to go to win comfortably.

Frerichs claimed silver in 9:04.79 with Kenyan Hyvin Kiyeng taking bronze (9:05.39).

“After my fifth place at the world championships in Doha, I knew a medal would be possible if I run a good race,” said Chemutai.

Chemutai’s victory came just minutes after her Ugandan counterpart Winnie Nanyondo qualified for 1500m women’s finals in the olympics when she finished in the fourth position.

China is the lead Gold medal holder with 32 gold medals followed by United states with 25 gild medals leaving  Japan, the host country in 3rd place with 21 Gold medals.

This has left many Ugandan fans excited to see a Ugandan female win Gold after a long time but appealed to government to construct better training  facilities and also give more funds to the sport industry in Uganda.
