A devastating crash involving two taxis on Friday night has resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left 11 others seriously injured. The accident occurred at Kiwawu, along the Mityana-Kampala road in Mityana District.
The incident involved two Toyota Hiace vehicles. According to Ms. Rachel Kawala, the Wamala region police spokesperson, the driver of a taxi heading from Kampala lost control after hitting a pothole near the Kiwawu-Kasiba LC1 area. The taxi veered off its lane and collided with another taxi coming from Mityana.
“Unfortunately, both vehicles lost control, causing motor vehicle UBH 846U to overturn on its right-hand side, killing four passengers on the spot and injuring 11 others,” Ms. Kawala reported.
The deceased have been identified as Assuman Bossa, a 24-year-old resident of Buwawula in Mityana District, and Tinah Namugenyi, a 26-year-old resident of Kasalaga-Zigoti in Mityana District. The identities of a young girl and a young boy who also died in the crash were not available at the time of the report. Their bodies have been taken to Mityana General Hospital for post-mortem examinations following the 11 pm collision.
The wreckage of both vehicles has been towed to Mityana police station pending inspection. The identities of the two drivers remain unknown as they are still at large. Ms. Kawala attributed the cause of the crash to reckless driving.
This tragic incident occurred just two days after another severe accident in the region. On June 19, 15 market vendors from Mityana lost their lives, and over 30 others were injured when the truck they were traveling in overturned at Namirayngo village in Bukuya Sub County, Kassanda District.
