The police in Mbale City have detained a 17-year-old girl on allegations of stealing a newborn baby boy from Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, identified the suspect as Kakai from Namunsi, Northern City Division in Mbale City.
According to Taitika, Kakai and her accomplices were seen near Atuhairwe, the baby’s biological mother, on Friday, July 5, 2024. When Atuhairwe went for a bath, Kakai and her friends allegedly seized the opportunity to take the baby. However, they were intercepted by security personnel at the hospital gate.
“People around the gate were so angry that they wanted to lynch her, but she was saved by the police,” Taitika reported.
Kakai is currently being held at Mbale Central Police Station. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend her accomplices, under case number SD REF: 07/04/07/24.
