Youth prepare as Uganda gears up to mark world youth day celebrations

Uganda will today join the international United Nations fraternity to mark the International Youth day celebrated every 11th August.

The event will take place at Kololo ceremonial grounds will be priseded over by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni taking a scientific approach due to the pandemic.

The even will run under the theme: Youth Innovation for Transformation of food systems and suitable Human Health”.

Hon. Nyirabashitsi Sarah Mateke the minister for youth and children noted the need for marking this day saying it is an excellent opportunity to audit and take stock of various interventions designed to empower and economically emancipated the youth worldwide.

“It is a day which we evaluate ourselves on the implementation of the world programme of action on youth government, private sector, civil society and religious institutions plus the youth empowerment” she said in part.

According to the minister, over 250,000 youth have engaged in the youth livelihood programme with 46% of the projects being agricultural in nature.

With this year’s theme running under transformation of food systems, the minister appealed to youth to take advantage of agro-indusrialization which will contribute to the rapid commercialization of the agricultural sector.

“The agro-indusrialization strategy will address low production and productivity of primary agriculture, poor harvest handling and storage, limited value addition and insufficient market access”. She said.

The honourable plegeded government intervention to the youth to do all that it can to support the youth in agriculture to not only make it fun but “extremely rewarding on economic terms”.
