‘I only know Jazmine through her pictures, not music’ – Maurice Kirya

Musician Maurice Kirya said that he only knows Lydia Jazmine through her pictures on social media but he doesn’t know any of her songs. “Jazmine, I don’t know her music, I know her as a person… I don’t even know a single song of hers. She looks good. When I’m scrolling through [the internet], somehow she pops up,” he said while appearing on Galaxy FM when he was asked to name his favourite female singers.

His favourite is Cindy Sanyu though he noted that he hasn’t heard new music from her. “I used to be excited about Cindy. I haven’t heard her new work. The only music I know is the old one. I haven’t heard something new, but I hope I can get to hear [her new music]. Cindy has some really dope [songs],” he said.

His other favourite is Lilian Mbabazi, who recently dropped a mini-album named The One, and Sheebah Karungi, who will hold a concert at Kampala Serena Hotel on December 9. “Lilian Mbabazi, yeah, yeah, she’s good and Sheebah, has done a great job, I think, as well. She has done a really, really good job.”

On the male side, he named John Blaq, Nutty Neithan, Grenade Official and Rabadaba.“I really love John Blaq, I think he’s very clever with his words and melodies. He’s one of my favourites… Lately I’m enjoying a lot of Grenade… There’s an artiste that pains me because I no longer hear his music, but when he had just started he was good: Nutty Neithan. I really think he’s one of the greatest dancehall artistes we’ve had,” he said.

“Another person that pains me is Rabadaba, I hear he’s about to release an album. I hope he does.”

During the interview, the Mulembe Gwa Kirya singer talked about his coffee shop startup named Sound Cup, which he started in 2013 but closed after four years of operations. He said it’s now focusing on delivering processed coffee with main operations in Netherlands.

Maurice Kirya also revealed that he paid his school fees for most of his education because the finances at home, which he left when he was 17, weren’t stable.

To do this, he worked with African Youth Alliance as a peer educator, did photography, worked on construction sites, cooked and sold food with his brother Vampino.

He released first song when he was 14. The Wooye singer, who split with his Dutch baby mama Lisa Gceverbeek in 2021, said he is now single.
