Swangz Avenue musician, Priscilla Zawedde aka Azawi, has revealed that Uganda is the laboratory of African music. If a song gets into the country and it doesn’t become a hit, that musician wherever they are should just know that it won’t sell out.
The Quinamino singer added that the East African country has good taste for music. “Uganda is a test market for African music, if your song is big here, it can be a hit anywhere. We just have a good taste in music,” said Azawi.
One of the singer’s followers asked her why Ugandan musicians have failed to make good music. Apparently, music lovers in the country can only concentrate on foreign music.
Azawi replied by saying that “good question bro, I honestly don’t know but soon I believe things will change with the great new minds entering the industry. There’s no excuse for not making good music!”
This isn’t the first time such an opinion is passed over by a high-ranking Ugandan musician. For Azawi, she can be excused because she’s made good quality music that has actually crossed borders in her short existence on the scene. For others, the focus has mainly been on the commercial side and not quality.
This year alone has seen Nigerian artists with barely more than 2 hits grace the country for performance as headlining acts.
Despite cries from local artists to promoters, they have always been told to make good music. This is because this is business, not sympathy.
