The Police in Mukono are probing a fire outbreak that has claimed the life of a four-month-old baby boy.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman Patrick Onyango identified the deceased as Bianca Izaya Nsubuga, a son of Nalongo Margaret a roadside vendor in Mukono town.
Onyango said the incident happened at Kikooza village in Mukono Central division, Mukono Municipality at about 11:00 pm.
3-year-old Aliya Nabulime survived with severe injuries as she tried to save her sister.
It is alleged that the mother locked her three children in the house as she went to fry chips for sale at night.
“Nsubuga’s sister, Aliya Nabulime, 3, was seriously burnt as she tried to save the baby, but she managed to survive and she was rushed to Pentagon Medical Centre for treatment in critical condition,” Onyango said.
According to Police, Nabulime was saved by the community members who responded after seeing Nanlongo’s house on fire.
Josephine Nambalirwa, 7, who was also in the house, said the fire must have been ignited by the candle that they were using as a source of light.
The fire fighting Police from Mukono Division later managed to put out the fire though it was too little too late for Baby Nsubuga. The fire also destroyed other property including a bar.
Onyango said by the time Police reached the scene, the body of the baby had been whisked away to an unknown destination.
however, learned that the relatives had taken the body to its ancestral burial grounds at Kabembe in Mukono where it will be buried.
