NUP’s Ssewanyana, Ssegirinya re-asserted on fresh charges.

Honourable Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya on Wednesday appeared before Masaka magistrate Charles Yeteise over fresh charges of murder.

The magistrate on reading the charges said that on 2nd August in kiseka Village, Lwengo District, the two Honourable MPs allegedly killed a boda boda rider. According to Charles, the two could not be given chance to hear thier response because of the grave offence.

The Mps will send 6 months in prison.

Their Lawyer and Kampala MP Shamim Malende said that her clients should be given chance to seek private medical attention for allegedly being tortured by security operatives which the magistrate refused to grant saying they will get medical attention in the correctional facility hospital.

“The honourables have been arrested on fresh charges and they are not in good conditions” Malende said to the press.

Ssewanyana was whisked into a security van on gun point last week after he was set free by prison authorities something which rubbed the public the wrong way.

While addressing parliament at a seating Yesterday, the Mps pointed out the issue of mode of atrest of MPs to the Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanya who sided with them saying it was wrong for operatives to arrest Mps without the knowledge of the Speaker.

The Human rights body also spoke on the issue saying that the way Mps and other citizens are arrested is not in line with the law.

“An arresting officer should identify himself, present an arrest warrant and ask the person to be arrested to go to where they need him without the use of force” an officer at the Uganda Human rights said.

“It is only when a person to be arrested does not comply with the arresting officer and has a weapon that reasonable force can be used” the officer added.

In Uganda many people speaking against the government end up arrested and taken incommunicado without atte knowledge of their relatives, lawyers or friends some not being seen forever.
