The pandora papers with millions of leaked documents exposing secret wealth and dealings of world leaders, politicians and billionaires has revealed assets worth a million dollars that belong to the president of Kenya, Uhuru Mwigayi Kenyatta and his close family members.
According to the data obtained by the International Consortium of Invesigative Journalists with more than 600 journalists from 117 countries looking at hidden fortunes of some of the powerful people on the planet revealed that the family secretly owned a network of offshore companies that have been linked to 11 firms of which one was valued was holding assets of $30 million.
Documents show that a foundation called Varies was set up in 2003 in Panama, naming Mr Kenyatta’s mother, Ngina, 88, as the first benefactor – and Kenya’s leader as the second benefactor, who would inherit it after her death.
There’s no reliable estimate of the Kenyatta family’s net worth but its vast business interests span transport, insurance, hotels, farming, land ownership and the media industry in Kenya.
In 2018, Kenyatta on BBC’s Hard Talk said that all his wealth was publicly stated as established in law.
Other world leaders named in the Pandora Papers include the King of Jordan Abdullah II, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Gabon’s President Ali Bongo Ondimba and President of Congo-Brazzaville Denis Sassou-Nguesso.
