five Ugandan solders serving in the African Union Mission in Somalia have been found guilty of killing seven civilians AMISOM said.
Two of the five were sentenced to death and three given to serve a 37 year jail term each.
“After sitting from 2-12th November 2021 and reviewing all facts including witness statements, the court martial on 12th November 2021, found the solders guilty of killing the civilians” an AMISOM statement said.
The two will be repatriated to Uganda to serve their sentences.
AMISOM had deployed over 1500 solders to fight Al Qaeda in Mogadishu.
Ugandan solders have in the past been involved in illegal activities. In 2016, they had been accused of stealing and selling of fuel meant for AMISOM to civilains.
In 2013, Uganda recalled 24 solders for allegedly selling food ratios meant for solders.
