The presidents office on Monday said that the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa tested positive for Covid 19 and was receiving treatment for mild symptoms.
According to the President’s office, the fully Vaccinated president started feeling unwell after leaving a state memorial service for former President F.W de Klerk in cape town on Sunday.
It was not clear if it was an infection of the new Omnicron variant.
The presidency said Ramaphosa and his team had been tested for covid 19 many times last week during visits to four West African Countries.
In early November, South Africa had recorded some 200 new infection cases but dramatically rose soon after.
As of Sunday, the country had recorded some 18000 new confirmed daily cases of covid 19 with more than 70 percent cases estimated to be from the Omicron according to genetic sequencing surveys
