Transport ministry sets new transport fares

The ministry of works and Transport in a joint effort with the public Transport stakeholders has made a downward revision of Transport fairs.

This comes after the president of Uganda, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni directed the full reopening of the transport sector from 50 percent capacity to 100 percent during his address to the nation on 31st December 2021.

Speaking at the media center, the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala said that he had talks with different stake holders to ensure cheaper transport especially now that students are preparing for school.

Taxi and bus operators will now take full capacity charging passengers cheaper although they were warned from loading passengers from in designated areas

“We held a number of meetings with the relevant stakeholders including the ministry of education and sports, Taxi operators and agreed on a plan to ensure that transportation of students to school would be efficient, safe and affordable” Katumba said.

Katumba noted that after engaging with the public transport operators, a new reduced fare was agreed on to be charged and all taxi stages and buses will be required to display the agreed fairs for their respective routes.

“In order to ensure compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures, all taxis and buses are required to operate from the designated taxi parks or bus terminals” He said warning that those found parking or loading from the streets or outside the designated taxi parks or bus terminals risk their vehicles from being impounded.

Katumaba also urged the public to board public transport from designated staged and avoid booking tickets or paying money to anyone outside the designated areas to avoid “crooks” from conning them of their money.

“for instance, they charge a passenger going to for Portal UGX 100,000, issue him or her a ticket then take him to a bus that is not aware of the fraud where they pay the bus UGX 30,000”. He explained.

After over two years of partial lockdown, President museveni on 31st December 2021 directed opening of all sectors advising schools to open in a phased manner starting on 10th January 2022.
