The ministry of works and transport in collaboration with other stakeholders have reduced the transport fares on different routes in many parts of the country.
This comes after President Museveni on 31st December 2021 directed for all commuter Taxis, buses and coasters to operate at full capacity.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday morning in Kampala, the minister of works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala said that he had had engaged with different stake holders to reduce on the transport fares especially when transporters have been allowed to carry passengers at full capacity.
the Unified medium omnibus drivers operators (UMODO) reduced their fares from by half charging Ugx10,000 from Kampala to jinja city from 20,000.
Eastern routes from Kampala are charged as follows;
Iganga-13,000, Bukedeya and Mbale city 25,000
From Kampala to Masaka city, 25,000, Lyantonde, Kyazanga, Mbirizi at 20,000 and Kikoni 17,000.
From Kampala to Kayunga/Bugerere fares are at 7,000, Nagalama 5000, Nakifuma 5000.
The Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF) (Kampala Chapter) located along Ben Kiwanuka street also cut their transport fare prices charging a little less than they used to during covid although making it a bit higher than they used to charge before covid due to the escalating fuel prices.
Among some routes we selected for comparison include Kamala-Nsangi which used to charge 2500 before covid, 4500 during covid while carrying at half capacity and now 3000 at full capacity
Masaka was 14000 before, 25000 at half capacity and 15000 at full capacity.
However, the transporters were advised to observe SOP’s, ensure all passengers are vaccinated and carry a vaccination card along to show proof of full vaccination.
