India covid cases shoot up due to Omnicron variant

India has registers a quadruple number of patients with corona virus with the Omnicron taking over the delta variant.

The country has seen a rise In covid cases reaching 90,928 in the past 24 hours mainly in areas of Mumbai, New Delih and Kolkata experiencing a surge in the numbers.

Statistics of NDTV showed that the state of Maharashtra received the highest cases with a record 797 cases followed by Dehli and thirdly Rajasthan.

On Wednesday, the federal health ministry confirmed the country’s first death linked to the variant, in an elderly man in Rajasthan state who was suffering from diabetes with daily deaths on Thursday rising by 325, taking the total to 482,876, as total infections hit 35.11 million.

According to government officials, the third wave will likely surpass the record of more than 414,000 reached last May.

The government warned the public not to take the new variant lightly but follow SOPs and keep safe to avoid catching the disease.

Top health official Vinod Kumar Paul in a statement said that the new variant will not put pressure on Government although he declined to estimate the new peak.

“There is no room for complacency,” he told a weekly media briefing, adding Omicron was driving surges in the cities. “Don’t take it for granted. We don’t know, the system can get overwhelmed, your household can get overwhelmed.” He added.

Inspite of the rise in number of cases, the country has not yet multiplied ts health facilities setting panic on who those infected would be handled,

the government reduced the number of home quarantine days for mild and asymptomatic patients to a week, from 10 or 14 days previously.
