Makerere University Bans public elections after stabbing incident

The Makerere University Electoral commission has banned the physical voting excircise and instead opted for online voting due to the Stabbing of a Uganda Christian University student that happened on Thursday this week.

Michael Betungura Bewatte, a 27-year-old Law student at UCU-Kampala campus and resident Kikoni Zone B, Makerere 3 Parish, Kawempe Division in Kampala were allegedly stabbed with a broken bottle in a scuffle between supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) as the two camps campaigned ahead of the guild elections that had been scheduled to take place on July 15, 2022.

the deceased is said to have been stabbed and bled to death .

speaking at an urgent press conference convined at the University, the University’s electroral commission chairperson Ronny Magara, the Guild Presidental Election has been halted and students’ leadership at the Higher learning facility terminated as well as the commission looks into the students’ election constitution.

“The ongoing elections for the 88th Makerere University Students’ Guild leadership are suspended indefinitely [and] the Makerere University Students’ Guild is suspended with immediate effect.” The University Council chairperson, Ms Lorna Magara, said in a statement, citing violence and death of Bewatte.

on Frday morning, security at the University was beefed up to prepare for any demonstartions the students may put up.
