Six dead in Yumbe accident after Police officer allegedly shot car tyre

A Uganda Police officer has been accused of being responsible for the death of at least six people and the injury of six others who were involved in a nasty accident at Malanga village, Akuru parish in Kululu sub-county, Yumbe district.

The Police officer is accused of shooting the tyre of the lorry, which was laden with charcoal and 12 boys atop the sacks. The accident, which happened Wednesday, November 2, 2022, involved a Fuso lorry with registration number UBE 917U which was allegedly transporting illegal charcoal from Kululu to Arua city.

By press time, the victims were not yet identified, but those injured were rushed to Jomorogo Health Centre III. According to eyewitness Rasul Buga, a resident of Mengo village in Kululu, it all started when the Fuso was intercepted by the Kululu leaders at Jomorogo trading centre at about 9:00am.

Buga said the leaders directed the yet-to-be-identified driver to return with the charcoal to the sub-county headquarters in the company of a parish chief and Police officer on a motorcycle, which he accepted. However, on his way to the headquarters, the driver allegedly branched off and headed toward Odravu sub-county.

“The driver at first refused to go back, but after a long exchange with the leaders, he accepted to return only to see him branching off taking Odravu route,” he said.

Buga added that the Police officer, who was being carried on a motorcycle by the parish chief, followed the lorry which had 12 boys on board.
