Masaka farmers cry out to government over high costs of farm inputs

Farmers in Masaka have cried out to the Government of Uganda to save the on high farm input costs that make cist of production high yet their market opts for cheap products.

The dissatisfied farmers worry that they make very little or no profit at all since they buy farm inputs at a costly price but when products are ready, people are reluctant to insure some more money to buy the products which leaves farmers with very little or no profits at all.

Pineapple farmers say they incur alot of money on transport since the roads are poor and pesticides are expensive yet pineapples sometimes fall in prices as low as 500ugx per pineapple.

“The conditions have changed, some farmers want to abandon farming due to expensive inputs. We used to buy manure at about 90,000ugx but now prices have doubled to about 200,000ugx” one farmer said adding that soils have also lost productivety due to over cultivation which forces farmers to rent out fertile places.

Buwonga, Kyanamukaka and Kyesiga are the main pineapple growing sub-counties in Masaka District
