At least five people died in a deadly road accident that occurred at Kibukuta Swamp, Kayabwe, along the Kampala-Masaka highway on Boxing Day. The incident occurred at around 7:00 am.
Traffic Police spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima said “the accident involved motor vehicle registration number UBM 489B Toyota Hiance and motor vehicle registration number UAM445B Mercedes Benz.” Nampiima said “all vehicles were moving from the Kampala side to Masaka.”
She added: “The suspected cause of the accident is speeding by both vehicles which were coming from the same direction and the Mercedes Benz was overtaking at a terrible speed and lost control, knocked the toyota Hiace which went off the road and overturned and the Benz overturned too.”
While the identities of the deceased have not been established yet, three are female adults while the two are male adults who were passengers in the Toyota Hiace.
Five unknown victims who were traveling in the Mercedes Benz have been rushed to Nkozi Hospital. Road accidents have been on the rise in recent years.
Police last week deployed hundreds of traffic officers to enforce road safety during the festive season. Nampiima urged all road users to be “vigilant and observe maximum road discipline.”
