Police in Rakai District are currently investigating a devastating motor crash that claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals while en route to a burial site in neighbouring Isingiro District.
The incident occurred when a fuso truck, carrying over 35 residents from the villages of Ssanje and Kigolomolo in Kyarurangira Sub County, Rakai District, lost control and overturned multiple times. Tragically, 10 occupants lost their lives on the spot, while numerous others sustained severe injuries.
The crash, which transpired on Tuesday around 1 pm at Lwabaganda Cell, Dyango Town Council, near the border with Isingiro District, shocked eyewitnesses.
Mr. Paul Nuwamanya, one such eyewitness, described the vehicle’s alarming speed before the driver lost control, leading to the fatal accident.
Mr. Kaggwa Ssekamwa, the Rakai District Chairperson and one of the initial responders, reported that approximately 20 survivors suffered serious injuries.
Urging healthcare providers to offer the utmost care to the casualties, he emphasized the importance of saving lives amidst the tragedy.
Rakai District Police Commander, Mr. Justus Tashobya, confirmed the incident, lamenting the loss of lives, particularly as Easter approaches.
He condemned reckless driving, a contributing factor to road accidents, and cautioned motorists to exercise caution despite road conditions.
This crash follows another recent tragedy in Kyankwanzi District, where a truck transporting students overturned, resulting in one student’s death and numerous injuries.
Additionally, in March, a collision at Kibimba Bridge along Iganga-Tororo highway claimed 10 lives and left several others injured.
Rakai District, with only 13km of tarmac, has long awaited the fulfillment of promises to tarmac key roads. Despite the challenges, authorities urge responsible driving to prevent further tragedies on the region’s roads.
