Police have identified the assailant who attacked a client at a cash office in Nateete, on the outskirts of Kampala. The suspect, Ashraf Kiiza, is an employee at Bashir Grain Millers.
The incident occurred on Monday around 8 p.m. when Kiiza attacked Sam Turyamuhaki, who had entered the cash office. Armed with a machete and a hammer, Kiiza demanded money, initiating a scuffle between the two. Although he managed to injure Turyamuhaki, he was eventually overpowered and fled the scene.
Turyamuhaki recounted the incident, stating, “I was verifying eight million Shillings that had been handed to me by the owner of Bashir Grain Millers. A man unexpectedly entered the office carrying a sack. In a terrifying turn of events, he pulled out a machete and hammer, demanding the money I was counting.”
CCTV footage from the scene captured Kiiza placing the sack on waiting chairs as Turyamuhaki counted money. Kiiza then brandished the machete, demanding the money. Despite Turyamuhaki’s attempt to disarm him, Kiiza attacked and injured him before fleeing.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire reported that Turyamuhaki sustained severe head injuries but was promptly taken to a nearby health facility for treatment.
Owoyesigyire stated, “The police were informed about the incident and responded. Exhibits, including the weapons used in the assault such as the hammer and machete, were recovered. Additionally, CCTV footage from the scene has been obtained to aid in the ongoing investigation.”
The suspect, Kiiza, fled the scene and is currently at large. Police have launched a manhunt and are deploying all possible means to apprehend him. He is facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated robbery.
The motive behind Kiiza’s actions remains unclear, considering he was an employee of the grain company that had just provided money to Turyamuhaki.
