Police in Ntungamo are investigating a violent incident in which a suspect, involved in a domestic dispute, allegedly severed two fingers of the officer in charge of Rwashamaire police station during an attempted arrest.
The incident occurred at Kiyaga village, Nkongoro parish, Nyabihoko Sub County, when Mr. Rogers Wamono and other officers tried to apprehend the suspect. Mr. Wamono’s fingers were cut off by a machete thrown by the suspect, who had taken refuge in a house after fleeing from a bar fight.
Speaking from Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he is currently admitted, Mr. Wamono recounted the event. “The suspect had quarreled at a bar over a love affair and attacked his friend with a machete.
When the situation escalated, we were called in. Upon arriving at the scene, the suspect fled and hid in a house. We broke into the house, and as we tried to arrest him, he flung a machete at us, injuring my hand,” he explained.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the suspect had already injured two other individuals with the same machete before police intervened. “He was uncontrollable, so we called the police. When the officers broke into his house, he cut the OC Station’s fingers,” said resident Mr. Mwesigwa Joseph.
Mr. Wamono suffered severe injuries: his ring finger was completely severed, his pinkie was left hanging by a tissue, and two other fingers were badly hurt.
Ntungamo District Police Commander, Mr. Hannington Bushaija, stated that the 35-year-old suspect is now in custody as the investigation continues. “We are fortunate that our officers remained calm and did not retaliate despite the attack. The suspect is in custody, and we are conducting thorough investigations, including assessing his mental state,” Mr. Bushaija said.
Mr. Wamono received initial treatment at Devine Clinic Rwashamaire before being transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further care.
