In a series of devastating road crashes on Monday, Kasese District authorities have reported that at least five people lost their lives, and around seven others sustained injuries. These incidents have cast a shadow over the community as details emerge about the tragic events.
Fatal Accident on Kasese-Fort Portal Highway: The first accident occurred along the Kasese-Fort Portal Highway at Makumiani in Kasese Municipality’s Nyamwamba Division. A sinotruck vehicle collided with a motorcycle carrying two passengers, killing all three riders on the spot and leaving one person seriously injured.
The victims of this crash have been identified as 23-year-old Morris Thembo (the motorcyclist), Allan Masereka, and Isoma Boyi, all residents of Buhathi-Kasangali Cell in Bwesumbu Sub-county.
Eyewitness Daneri Muhindo recounted the incident: “The vehicle was heading to Kasese but when it reached the Katooke junction, it knocked one person who is now seriously injured and might lose his legs.
During that moment, the driver lost control and then rammed into a motorcycle which was coming from Kasese Town heading to the Hima side.”
Another Collision in Hima Town Council: In a separate incident in Nyangereka, Hima Town Council, two motorcyclists were involved in a head-on collision, resulting in both riders dying on the spot and leaving four passengers injured.
Eyewitness Wilson Masereka reported that the injured were rushed to various medical facilities for treatment, while the bodies were taken to Kasese Municipal Health Centre mortuary.
The deceased from this crash were identified as 44-year-old Wilson Rukendakenda and a man known locally as Boy Nyaflow.
Single Vehicle Accident in Bukonzo County East: Additionally, a single-vehicle accident occurred along the Kinyamaseke-Munkunyu Road in Bukonzo County East, where a Fuso vehicle overturned. The driver, in critical condition, was taken to Kagando Hospital, while two other occupants are receiving care at Kinyamaseke Health Centre III.
James Mwiruwabo, in charge of Kasese Municipal Health Centre, confirmed that the facility’s mortuary was holding five bodies of accident victims from these incidents.
Authorities Urge Caution: Acting Rwenzori East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, SP Luka Mbusa, urged road users to exercise caution and avoid recklessness. “Most of these accidents are largely due to human error which can be avoided.
For example, motorcycles are supposed to carry only one passenger, but they are fond of carrying two passengers which is unacceptable. However, investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact cause of the accidents,” he stated.
These tragic events serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences of negligence.
Authorities continue to investigate the causes of these accidents while urging the public to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
