Patrick Onyango, the Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, has disclosed that singer Gravity Omutujju was arrested in the city center due to his association with a gang of thieves.
The “Okwepicha” singer was apprehended yesterday while promoting his upcoming concert with a drive-through in the city. According to Onyango, Gravity lacked the necessary clearance from the police, and many of the individuals accompanying him were reportedly involved in phone snatching. Onyango explained that the arrest was intended to protect the singer’s reputation.
“We arrested Gravity because he was moving in the city without Police clearance. He had a lot of thugs who were snatching people’s phones. Therefore, arresting him was only doing him a favor so that people don’t say that Gravity’s crew is full of thieves,” Onyango stated.
Following the incident, Gravity was later released and boasted that no other artist could attract as large a crowd to the Lugogo Cricket Oval as he could. He also clarified that he was accompanied by only ten people who were helping distribute his concert flyers. As he moved through the city, more people joined in, drawn by his popularity.
Gravity further explained that he had instructed someone to obtain police clearance, but it appeared that the task was delayed. He also questioned why he was arrested in his own country simply for walking on foot.
The rapper’s concert, titled “Embaga Ya Isima Na Amina,” is scheduled for the 7th of next month. Interestingly, this date coincides with Mikie Wine’s concert at Jahazi Pier, Munyonyo. Given the ongoing tensions between Bobi Wine, Mikie Wine’s elder brother, and Gravity Omutujju, these simultaneous events are expected to be competitive.
