Uganda has revived over 2 million doses of the AstraZeneca and 300,000 of Sinovac so far in order to support the mass covid-19 vaccination the Health minister has revealed.
Speaking to the press in Kampala, minister Acheng said that the government is using a multi prolonged approach to secure adequate vaccines for the target population of 22 million people of 18 years and above and accessing vaccines through purchase from the COVAX facility , African Union, manufacturers and through donations from the COVAX facility.
According to the minister, a technical inter ministerial committee known as the ‘vaccine Acquisition committe’
Was approved by a cabinet sitting of July 19th 2021 appointed by the Ministry of Health.
“A committee was established to guide decisions with respect to direct sourcing of vaccines”. She said.
The role of the committee, she added, was to review expression of interest to supply the COVID-19 vaccines based on the profile of the company, relationship with manufacturer of the vaccine, qualities that can be aquiered through agent, earliest date of delivery and period within which supplies can be revived, unit cost per dose and modes of payment, time frame, and who to be paid.
The Ministry expects 18 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine for 9 million people to arrive beginning October 2021, 9 million of London and Johnson vaccine from the African Union to cater for 9 million people expected next month in September and a batch by the Covax facility which it committed as a donation of up to 18 million doses to cover for 9million people.
The doses are expected to be administered to a target population of 22million people plus the additional population of children.
