Uganda Revenue Authority in partnership other organisations and companies have come to the rescue of pupils in Kabale district by donating a 30 seater boat and 70 life jackets to help aid thier crossing of lake Bunyoyi as they go to school.
Four years ago, a local television station run a story of the The Bwama Primary School pupils who passed through shocking ways to cross the lake and be able to attend school.
The acting assistant commissioner public and corporate affairs Mr. Ian Rumanyika while presenting the donation said that the donation was done after seeing the story and saw the threat caused by the hangouts crossings in the wee hours of the day just to get to school early enough for the .print lesson.
“URA’s heed to the cause came after a series of stories in 2017 that featured on a local television station highliting the plight of children who cross Lake Bunyonyi in the wee hours to access education on the main lamd” he said.
With organisations and companies teaming up the URA, a charity football match dubbed ‘URA tax derby’ was birthed in October 2019 managing to collect Ugx 73,652,000 with URA topping up 41 million to buy the Ugx 115 million boat.
“This initiative is part of the broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities prioritised by URA staff as a way of effecting social change in the communities in which they operate” Ian explained.
Uganda is faced with a problem of access to public places such as hospitals and schools where either roads and bridges are washed away by flooding water or access roads are impassable by pedestrian and motorists.
