The Uganda Security Printing Company Limited though its Managing Director, Mugerwa George, has unveiled an industry construction project that will be capable of printing the country’s security documents rather than having them imported.
The revelation was made while addressing the press in Kampala during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Starting in 2018, the Government of Uganda had opened up bids for companies to show interest and have the best company win. During the process, the Germany Consortium, Veridos Gmbh and Gieseke and devrient Gmbh signed a Joint Venture Agreement which resulted into the Uganda Security Printing Company-USPC LTD with Uganda having 51% of the shares while the German Consortium got 49%.
According to the Mr. Mugerwa George, the venture will come with a number of advantages for the country at large including the revamping of the Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation, commissioning an E-passport and ID factory and also supplying the Ugandan government with all security documents and their corresponding supporting system.
The project has been able to give birth to an interim personalization center, delivered e-passport blank booklets among other achievements.
“The close to 1 trillion project is expected to create direct employment of about 300 people”. Mugerwa said.
Kenneth Oluka, the Acting Managing Director, Uganda Printing and Publishing Company, (UPPC) was optimistic about the project saying that it will elevate the country’s International standard “with the result that Uganda shall comform to the internationally accepted security printing standard, ISO-14298”.
