He Was Defending Himself Against Boda Boda Mob – UPDF Arrests, Defends Officer Who Shot And Killed Cyclist At Kawanda School…

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) deputy spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki has revealed that their officer shot and killed a boda boda cyclist in self defence. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Mr. Waliggo Ronald (38), who was a resident of Kirinya Bigo, Kawanda in Wakiso had a misunderstanding with Ssali Abdul who was driving a Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) car.

“Preliminary investigations into the matter indicate that Abdul was leaving the school when he met a number of motorcycles and cars at the gate. The road being narrow, this prompted him to squeeze on the side where the deceased had parked,” he said.

Oweyesigire added, “This caused an altercation after Waligo complained to the driver of being squeezed which attracted a big group of riders that also condemned his action.

“This prompted the driver to enter his vehicle where he picked an AK47 rifle shooting at the victim. He died instantly and the driver sped off from the crime scene.

“We have been able to identify the vehicle with the help of CCTV cameras. The number plate of the said vehicle has been identified by the Police as H4DF 1939.”

Oweyesigire divulged that the deceased was shot on left shoulder and the bullet came out from the right shoulder something that killed him instantly.

“His body was conveyed to city mortuary Mulago for Post-mortem. We also recovered a motorcycle Bajaj Boxer UEG 721c that belongs to the deceased at the scene of crime,” he said.

He added that the territorial Police at Kampala Metropolitan will liase with the UPDF to help identify the driver for statement recording and Prosecution.

However, UPDF deputy spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki disclosed that the driver has been arrested. He condemned the acts of mob justice by some elements in boda boda.

“It’s unfortunate that such a soul has been lost and we condemn the act. Indeed, the driver was arrested for further action. But justice should not be one sided. Mob justice by some elements in boda boda must stop. Attempts of self defence could have been avoided,” Col. Akiiki said.

According to journalist Sudhir Byaruhanga, the deceased has left eight (8) children.

“The family of 38-year-old Ssekayingo Ronald who was allegedly shot dead by a UPDF officer at the gate of Kawanda SS wants justice. He has left behind 8 children,” he tweeted
