Ministry of Education issues shocking guidelines on optional subjects for secondary schools.

The Ministry of Education and sports has issued out new guidelines to Government secondary schools to phase out optional subjects that have less than twenty students.

According the permanent secretary from the ministry, Mrs. Cate Lamoro the move was to enable teachers with few students join other schools where class is under staffed and also help Government reduce on wasting resources since some teachers are paid even if they have few or no students to teach.

Among the optional subjects, include Fine Art, Entrepreneurship, Christina religious education, technical drawing, and agriculture, Luganda and German and French among other subjects.

In addition, Lamoro said that Arts teachers teaching from Senior 3 and four have to teach 16 lessons a week, and 24 times S4

It is expected that the new changes will take effect next term and advised Head teachers to write to the ministry if they have more than enough teachers or few so that the ministry can act accordingly.
