Renowned broadcaster and former politician, Al-Hajji Abdul Nsereko, passed away, leaving a void in Uganda’s media and political landscape. Nsereko, with a distinguished career at Radio Uganda and later Uganda Broadcasting Services (UBC), held various roles, including directorship.
His son, Muhammad Nsereko, Kampala Central Member of Parliament, confirmed his demise, citing cardiac arrest as the cause.
Expressing shock, Muhammad Nsereko revealed that his father seemed lively and showed no signs of serious illness when they interacted the evening before. Although diabetic, Al-Hajji Nsereko maintained a vibrant spirit. A widower since 2009, he chose not to remarry, leaving behind 18 children.
In a statement, Muhammad Nsereko announced that prayers would take place at Kibuli Mosque at 9:00 am on Thursday. Subsequently, the body would be transported to Bulika, Nama Sub County in Mukono district, for a 2:00 pm burial.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, shared his condolences on social media, reminiscing about their university days when Al-Hajji Nsereko mentored many in politics. Acknowledging Nsereko’s multifaceted service to the nation, Tayebwa praised his son, Hon. Alhaj Nsereko Mohamed, for upholding the family legacy.
Kateregga Musaazi, Kimaanya-Kabonera Deputy Resident City Commissioner, mourned Nsereko’s passing, recognizing his contributions to journalism and the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Musaazi, who first encountered Nsereko during an Eid El Fitri Day broadcast in 1989, described him as a mentor, parent, and friend, particularly in the realms of journalism, Islam, and NRM activities. Nsereko’s tenure as the Resident District Commissioner for Kyenjojo further exemplified his dedication to public service.
As Uganda bids farewell to this iconic figure, Al-Hajji Abdul Nsereko’s impact on broadcasting, politics, and public service will be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
