Following a meeting between the top leadership of the ruling National Unity Platform (NUP) and Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, aimed at addressing internal challenges, Principal Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, has taken decisive action by suspending Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Member of Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, from his position as Deputy President of the party.
The announcement came through a statement released on Thursday evening via the party’s official social media channels.
The statement cited allegations of corruption and abuse of office as the reasons behind Mpuuga’s suspension, with Bobi Wine stating that Mpuuga had failed to provide satisfactory explanations for his actions.
Mpuuga, who also serves as the Parliamentary Commissioner, came under scrutiny amid reports that he had allocated himself funds totaling Shs 500 million as a service award, a move denounced by his colleagues within the leading opposition party as an abuse of office.
Despite calls for his resignation, Mpuuga remained adamant, asserting his commitment to NUP as a founder member and expressing his intention to initiate internal party reforms.
In response to Bobi Wine’s decision, Mpuuga is yet to issue a formal statement. As the situation unfolds, the actions taken within NUP’s leadership underscore the party’s commitment to unity, accountability, and transparency in its operations.
