In a tragic incident on Monday, a speeding car reportedly belonging to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) struck and killed two individuals in Lira City.

The victims, Ferdinand Otima, 25, and Raymond Ogwang, 66, both from Aliri Village in Akalo Sub-county, Kole District, were riding a motorcycle along the Lira-Soroti highway. The car, a Toyota Hilux with registration number UG 1234J, collided with them near Rima Primary School.

Superintendent of Police Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga region police spokesperson, confirmed that the vehicle was traveling from Soroti towards Lira City at high speed. “The driver lost control after hitting the motorcycle, subsequently injuring a pedestrian named Emmanuel Okullo and overturning the vehicle,” SP Okema stated.

The bodies of Otima and Ogwang have been transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examinations. Meanwhile, Okullo and a passenger in the vehicle, Betty Agola, sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.

Both the motor vehicle and motorcycle have been towed to Lira Central Police Station for further inspection. The driver is currently in police custody, and authorities have attributed the cause of the crash to reckless driving.
