National Unity Platform (NUP) party president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has responded to remarks made by Commissioner of Parliament Mathias Mpuuga, who labeled NUP leaders as marijuana smokers and drunkards.
During a press conference on Friday at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Bobi Wine addressed Mpuuga’s comments, asserting, “The world knows our history.” He pointed out that Mpuuga joined NUP fully aware of the party’s background.
Bobi Wine highlighted that these so-called marijuana smokers and drunkards were the very people who elected Mpuuga as Leader of the Opposition and later as Commissioner of Parliament.
He suggested that Mpuuga only remembered to accuse them of such behavior after they criticized him for accepting a UGX 500 million service award.
“You joined marijuana smokers, and they elected you as deputy president to deputize a marijuana smoker. They also made you Leader of the Opposition.
The same marijuana smokers voted you as a commissioner,” he stated. “When you engaged in misconduct and they called you out for it, that’s when you labeled them marijuana smokers.”
Bobi Wine emphasized that Mpuuga’s remarks reveal more about his character than about the NUP leaders. He urged his followers to raise their children with good character and morals.
Mathias Mpuuga, speaking at an event in Mityana District, implied that leaders should always remain sober, seemingly targeting his party president and NUP leadership. He noted that President Museveni, whom the party seeks to overthrow, does not smoke or drink.
“Anyone who wants to be a leader must remain sober 24 hours a day and pay close attention to current events. You cannot aspire to lead the country and make changes if you are a drunkard. The person (Museveni) you aim to overthrow does not smoke, does not go to bars, does not booze, and doesn’t even drink wine,” he stated.
The rift between Mpuuga and Bobi Wine has been growing, particularly after Mpuuga was publicly rebuked by NUP for accepting the parliamentary service award, an act perceived as corrupt by Robert Kyagulanyi.
