Former Attorney General Khiddu Makubuya has passed away, confirmed by family sources. He was 75 years old and had been grappling with a prolonged illness.

Makubuya, a distinguished professor of law and former Dean of Makerere University’s School of Law, breathed his last in the early hours of Monday morning.

Earlier this year, in June, there was confusion surrounding his health when local media erroneously reported his death. The family had clarified that he was still alive but facing serious health challenges.

“We understand that his health is a concern, but we are doing everything possible to ensure his recovery,” the family had stated, without providing further details at that time.

Makubuya’s career spanned both legal academia and political service. He served as Attorney General of Uganda from 2005 to 2011, a period marked by significant political turbulence with the rise of multipartism and the controversial figure of Dr. Kizza Besigye. During his tenure, Makubuya attempted to hinder Besigye’s 2005 nomination, citing his legal troubles at the time.

After leaving the position of Attorney General, Makubuya was appointed by President Museveni as Minister of Education, Sports, and General Duties on May 27, 2011, succeeding Janat Mukwaya. His political career was later marred by corruption allegations linked to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala.

Prior to his political career, Makubuya had a notable academic journey. He earned a First Class Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University and furthered his studies at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

Makubuya’s contributions to both the legal and political spheres leave a lasting impact, and his passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Uganda’s history.
