At least eight people have lost their lives, and several others have been injured following a head-on collision between a taxi and a Fuso truck early Monday morning at around 4:00 a.m. The devastating accident took place at Bulanga, along the Iganga-Jinja highway.
The taxi, registered as UBP 140D, was transporting passengers from Iganga to Kampala, while the Fuso truck, bearing the registration number UAX 761B, was en route from Kampala to Busia, carrying Daily Top brand packed milk.
Among the deceased are seven men and one woman, including Arajabu Menya, 30, a tipper driver from Bulanga trading center; Rajab Kakaire, 23, a resident of Iganga; and Hassan Kiige, 30, a businessman from Nabitende in Iganga District. Authorities are working to identify the other victims.
The injured survivors were initially taken to Iganga General Hospital before being transferred to Jinja Regional Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital for further treatment. The bodies of the deceased remain at Iganga Hospital’s mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Witnesses have pointed to the taxi driver as the likely cause of the collision, suggesting that he was overtaking another vehicle when he collided head-on with the truck.
Local residents are calling for the installation of speed humps at the accident site, citing the frequent and fatal accidents that have plagued the area.
The wreckage of both vehicles has been towed to Magamaga Police Station, where investigations into the tragic incident are ongoing.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura has attributed the crash to reckless driving, urging all road users to comply with traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
