The Higher Education Students’ Board has released the students’ beneficiary list for the Academic year 2024/25.
The list was officially released on Wednesday morning at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala.
speaking at the event, the Executive Director of the board noted that out of the 6661 students who applied for the loan scheme, only 3781 sucessfully qualified meeting all the criteria while over 20,000 did not meet the required criteria.
According to the Executive Director, only 1838 students were successful for the loan.
“We recieved very many applications but due to the funding envelop, we could not accomodate very many applicants” he said.
Wanyama noted that gender was considered during the process and 43% of the applicants chosen were female.
People with disabilities were also considered in a special way for the programme.
“People with disabilities were given the opportunity to study a programme of their choice”. he said.
at least 29 People with disabilities were considered for the scheme.
Mukwatampola Muzamiru the commissioner for Admissions, scholarship and students’ affairs on behalf of the Permanent Secretary ministry of Education and sports noted that the HESFB has been delivering on its mandate to increase access to education through the loan scheme since its inception in 2014.
“Since its inception in 1014, the HESFB has been delivering on its mandate by increasing equitable access to higher education through the implementation of the students’ Loan scheme. The scheme was introduced as an alternative module to address gaps that were created by the success of basic education initiatives since government of uganda implemented the Universal Primary Education in 1997”. He said adding that it was on this basis that Universal secondary Education and Universal post-O-level Education Programmes were created to support post primary students to obtain education.
The board had a total of 1838 beneficiaries of which 466 were at Diploma level and 1372 at Bachelor level.
