Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region Police spokesperson, said the first accident, which claimed five lives happened at Mile-Three, Nyamitanga on Mbarara-Isingiro Road, while the other occurred on the Mbarara-Ntungamo road near Stabex petrol station.

In the first accident, Kasasira said a Canter truck (reg no UAZ 438E) that was coming from Nyamitanga heading to Isingiro tried to overtake another vehicle, but in the process, a motorcycle was coming from the opposite side. In the process of trying to dodge the motorcycle, it knocked a Toyota Corolla (reg no UAE 777E), blue in colour.

The driver and co-driver of the Corolla died on the spot, whereas the other three people who were seated in the behind seats died upon reaching Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

The victims in the Corolla were identified as Allen Mwebaze, 36, from Rwetamu Kiruhura; Apollo Mwebaze, 45, from Rwetamu; Mary Kakwera, 70, from Rwamagwam Rakai district; George Kanyingana, 40, from Rakai and the driver of the Corolla whose identity has not yet been established.

Another accident

In the other accident that happened at Stabex, Kasasira narrated that a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (reg no UEY 417V) heading to Ruti from Mbarara carrying two passengers rammed into an oncoming vehicle while trying to overtake another car.

The rider and his passengers fell off. The motorcycle caught fire – in the commotion, another vehicle, coming from behind, crashed one of the passengers, killing her on the spot, but her baby survived with no injuries.

The deceased was identified as Adrine Kyokunda, 27, from Kinoni in Rwampara district. All six bodies from the two separate accidents were taken to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

The wreckages were towed and parked at Mbarara Central Police Station.
