Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has denied torture claims by National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter Eric Mwesigwa. Eric Mwesigwa, while narrating his ordeal to NUP party president Bobi Wine earlier this week, said he had been abducted and tortured by the regime.
Mwesigwa claimed he had been burnt by hot metals on the chest, had his skin torn and kicked in the stomach and chest while being asked how NUP was planning to ‘overthrow the government’.
The spokesperson of UPDF Brig Gen. Felix Kulayigye has come out to state that Eric Mwesigwa was not in the hands of any security agency as he claimed and advised him to go report to the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).
“Having done a thorough check on all security agencies, it has been established that one Mwesigwa Eric was not in the hands of any security agency. We advise him to go to the UHRC and report or the police so that we can commence an intensive investigation,” Kulayigye said in a tweet.
Eric Mwesigwa, in the company of lawyer Saasi Marvin, Tuesday afternoon reported a torture complaint at UHRC with the hope of attaining justice. Mwesigwa had been reported missing for about two weeks before he was unveiled at NUP secretariat on Monday, February 13th, 2023 in a sorry state.
