A woman was arrested in Mukono for burning a young girl after stealing sugar cane

The Police in Mukono are holding a suspect who allegedly burned the hands of an eight-year-old girl with a melted plastic bag, accusing her of stealing sugar.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, identified the suspect as Margaret Nalubowa, a resident of Nassuuti Cell in Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality. The young victim is Martha Itimana Nakato.

Onyango said Nalubowa is detained at Mukono Central Police Station as investigations into a case of child abuse continue.

A whistleblower tipped the councillor of Mukono Central Division, Isaac Kalyango, about a girl who had been burned.

Kalyango toldNew Visionthat he liaised with his fellow leaders and Mukono Police, who sought Nalubowa. “Nalubowa first denied any knowledge about the allegations, saying she did not know about Nakato,” he said.

“We realised she had smuggled her out of the home to an unknown location.” But later, when Nalubowa was arrested, she directed the Police to Nakato’s apparent hideout.

The young girl was found at the home of Aisha Kayirangwa in the nearby village of Kasangalabi, where she was receiving treatment for burns. Kayirangwa was also taken to Mukono Police Station to record a statement.

Nakato said she was burned with a melted plastic bag after she was reportedly found stealing sugar. She said her father brought her and her three siblings from Mukono from Nakasongola after the death of their mother.
