Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, Uganda’s President and the National Chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), has met opposition Democratic Party (DP) President General Norbert Mao at State House Entebbe.
The meeting, which happened on Wednesday, July 20, and was attended by key officials from both DP and NRM, centered on how the ruling party and the opposition outfit can work together. After the meeting in Entebbe, Museveni confirmed that both political organizations had inked a cooperation agreement.
Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986 when he took power following a five-year bush war that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Ugandans, praised Mao and fellow DP leaders for being mature and for not being myopic.
“I met with Democratic Party President Norbert Mao at State House Entebbe. We signed a cooperation agreement between the NRM and the DP,” said Museveni.
“I salute the DP leadership for this gesture of mature, foresighted and constructive politics.”
The meeting and agreement between Museveni and Mao happened months after Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s son, declared the DP president the best opposition leader in Uganda with potential to succeed Museveni.
Mao was also on the spot for claiming that veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and Museveni work together and that they had held secret talks.
The DP boss has also in recent months criticized Bobi Wine’s NUP party, alleging that the political party was Museveni’s project.
