The Police in Rubanda district is investigating circumstances under which 91 people fell sick after eating food at a burial. SP Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional police spokesperson revealed that the incident was reported by Reuben Ahimbisibwe the Kitahurira cell chairperson in Kashasha parish, Nkumba Sub County in Rubanda district.
Maate told journalists that the incident happened on Friday at around 3 Pm when about 91 mourners felt unwell at the burial of the late Katuro Samuel in Kitahurira cell, Kashasha parish in Nkumba sub-county, Rubanda District.
The Regional [Police PRO said that the Cause of the illness was unknown but there was suspicion of food poisoning.
Police together with the Health team responded and conveyed the victims to various health centers in Muko, Kitahurira, lkumba, and Kyiizi where they got first Aid and were later discharged upon showing signs of improvement.
A medical report however ruled out food poisoning and attributed the illness to bacteria probably from poorly prepared food. A statement on a suspected food poisoning incident was entered at Rubanda Police station under reference number GEF: 001/2023.
