The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), through their spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye has narrated how 5 ADF Rebels killed 37, injured 8 and abducted 6 students in attack on Lubiriha Secondary School in Kasese while they were sleeping in their dormitories.
In a statement released today afternoon, Kulayigye said that the attack took place in the night of 16th June 2023 at around 11 :30pm.
“A group of suspected ADF terrorists attacked Mpondwe/Lubiriha Secondary School (privately owned) in Nyabugando Town Council Karambi Sub County in Kasese District.
Shortly our forces received this information and moved in quickly. Intelligence revealed that this attack was by suspected ADF rebels about 05 in number. The 5 Mountain Battalion Commander together with other sister forces advanced to the scene,” his statement read in part.
He added that on arrival, UPDF founds the school burning with dead bodies of students lying in the compound with the school food store broken into, posho and beans taken.
“Unfortunately, 37 bodies have been discovered and conveyed to Bwera hospital mortuary and 08 causalities/survivors taken to Bwera government hospital, 03 rescued alive and 06 were abducted,” he adds.
Kulayigye says that UPDF has embarked on pursuing the perpetrators to rescue the abducted students whom they used to carry the looted food towards Virunga National Park.
“The Chief of Defence Forces Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi and Commander Land Forces Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga have moved to this area for an on-spot assessment. UPDF remains committed to its mandate to protect the people of Uganda and their property.”
Meanwhile, President Museveni has disptched a team from the Ministry of Education led by Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysestom Muyingo to Lubiriha Secondary School to commiserate with families of students massacred by the ADF terrorists last night.
Lubirira Secondary School is about two kilometers from the Democratic Republic of Congo border with Uganda.
