Mpigi Police on Monday arrested a Pakistani, who is an employee of a road construction company over allegedly strangling his Ugandan wife following a domestic misunderstanding relating to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) results.
Taheed Waeed, a resident of Kalagala-Kikutizi zone near the Uganda Equator in Kayabwe, Mpigi, was arrested on Sunday night after allegedly leading the Police to a pit where he had dumped the body of his wife.
According to the area LC1 defense secretary and neighbor, Stephen Mwogezi, the naked body of Monica Nalubega, who came from Kinoni in the Lwengo district, was retrieved in the night from an abandoned home pit and taken to Mulago City mortuary after the arrest of the suspect.
Nalubega, who operated a supermarket in Kayabwe town, had two children with the suspect, one of seven months and the other five years old.
It is alleged that the couple recently developed misunderstandings after taking their two children for DNA tests. According to Mwogezi, the couple was recently engaged in fights at home and this forced Nalubega to leave and return to her home.
He said she, however, the woman returned with the 7-month-old baby on Thursday at the invitation of the suspect after promising that he wanted to settle the matter amicably.
Nalubega goes missing : However, her relatives, some of whom live in Kayabwe town, got concerned about her whereabouts after she went missing for three days.
He explained that on Saturday, the relatives started looking for her and when they approached him, he claimed that she had gone to Kampala to shop for supermarket items, as usual.
“We, however, started getting a funny stench around the fenced home and feared for the life of the woman after all these quarrels,” the defence secretary said.
It is said the suspect later went to the Police with the baby claiming that his wife had disappeared and abandoned the baby at home. But according to Mwogezi, while still at the Police station, relatives also arrived and wanted to file a complaint of a missing person, but he left them at the Police post and returned home.
The Police, however, in the evening stormed the home and after a brief interrogation, Taheed allegedly confessed to the murder claiming that the wife had extramarital affairs and sired children outside, which he claimed to be an abomination in his culture.
Police sealed off the home and by Monday morning were still camped at the home for further investigations. Police retrieved the naked body, but parcelled and tied it with cello tape.
Residents who reached the home were, however, overcome with shock and stench from the pit where the rotting body was retrieved.
Enock Makumbi, one of the residents, said the couple had been living a happy life, but the man has not been working of late after the company suspended some of their operations.
“The man bought a plot here and constructed a house and married the woman with whom they have been living together, this is a big surprise to us,” he said. The police were yet to comment on the matter.
